Turn Sports Data into Game-Changing Insights

Build expertise in statistical modeling, data visualization and programming while exploring how analytics influences both on-field performance and business operations across professional and collegiate sports. Offered through the David B. Falk College of Sport, the program equips graduates to help teams, leagues and sport businesses use data to gain a competitive advantage.

What You'll Learn

Develop the skills to:

  • Analyze complex sports data using statistical and econometric methods
  • Build predictive models to evaluate player performance and game strategy
  • Develop data visualization tools and dashboards
  • Use programming languages such as R and Python for sports analytics

Sport Analytics Curriculum

You'll build expertise in statistical modeling, programming, data visualization and machine learning while exploring how sports organizations use analytics to gain insights and make informed decisions related to player evaluation, team performance, fan behavior, sports gambling and sport business strategy.

Put Analytics Into Action Through Experiential Learning

Students are encouraged to participate in projects, competitions and extracurricular opportunities that provide hands-on experience working with real sports data and industry challenges.

These experiences can help you strengthen your portfolio, build confidence and gain practical experience presenting insights to industry professionals.

Career Outcomes

Sport analytics professionals work with teams, leagues, sports media companies, analytics firms and technology companies supporting the sports industry. Graduates of the program may pursue opportunities including:

 

Admissions Requirements include:

  • Completed application
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate- and graduate-level coursework
  • Resume
  • Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation

Note: A successfully completed undergraduate or graduate-level course in statistics or significant experience using statistics in a professional capacity and prior sport experience are preferred but not required to apply to this program.

Graduate students are encouraged to gain experience by participating in extracurricular activities organized by Syracuse, including clubs and organizations that work with teams, leagues and companies that need analytical services. These experiences allow students to present findings to industry professionals and build practical experience applying analytics to real sports data.

While many of these clubs meet on-campus, the university will provide the support necessary for online students to seize the opportunity to apply their skills through projects and competitions that address real-world sports analytics challenges.

The online Sport Analytics M.S. program admits for the fall semester only, due to the sequencing of courses. While our priority deadline is February 15, we continue to review applications on a space available basis.
